Elephant Art Conservation Education

join us today!
It is unacceptable that an elephant dies every 15 minutes in Africa. We need the voices of Africa's youth to become a clarion call against elephant poaching and all forms of wildlife crime.
Elephant poaching and other wildlife crimes have exploded in recent years, driven largely by Asian demand, particularly from China.  It is scandalous that the illegal wildlife trade is the fourth most lucrative in the world today - after drugs, arms and human trafficking - estimated at US$200 billion annually.

Elephant poaching is engulfing Africa.  In 1979, 1,3million savannah elephants roamed the plains of East and Southern Africa.  Slaughtered for their ivory, there are only 350,000 left, according to the 2016 Great Elephant Census and the forest elephants of West and Central Africa are also highly threatened.  From its epicentre, elephant poaching is steadily moving south, now threatening the elephant populations of Zambia, Botswana, Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.  Carried out by armed militia - some linked to international terrorism – elephant poaching is also killing game rangers and conservationists fighting to save this iconic African species.
There is worldwide concern that poaching, habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict may wipe out Africa’s iconic elephants in a generation.  We need to do something about it.  The Kingsley Holgate Foundation and its partners are serious about working with communities, especially to raise awareness and instil a passion for wildlife amongst Africa’s youth.  In the words of the iconic conservationist, the late Dr Ian Player,  “If we do not hand the baton of conservation over to the youth, we are doomed.”

How Does Elephant Art Work?

One of the key strengths of Elephant Art Conservation Education is that it is purely volunteer-driven, and each partner supplies his or her own resources and manpower.  The key requirement is that our partners are deeply concerned about the elephant poaching crisis and want to instill a passion for wildlife amongst young people. Register as an Elephant Art partner online here. Once registered, you will have access to the Elephant Art Information Pack, which includes a step-by-step guide to conducting Elephant Art in schools, the Elephant Art lesson-on-a-page template, and other resources. See our step-by-step guide.

“ The poaching epidemic has reached the shocking levels of one rhino being killed almost every day, whilst the slaughter of elephants elsewhere in Africa continues unabated.”
